Jack Demmer Automotive Group History
Jack Demmer grew up around cars. In the 1930's his father, Charles Joseph Demmer, sold used cars from their family home on 14th Street in Detroit. At the age of 16, Jack sold his first car, a 1935 Ford Coupe for $135.00, resulting in a $7.50 profit. He continued to work at the Used Car Lot, and after World War II started, Jack enlisted in the United States Navy. After returning from serving our country, he went back to work at his father's used car lot and attended Wayne State University.
Jack met Jimmy Spitler while playing baseball on their church's men's club team. In the spring of 1957 Ford Motor Company approved them to open an Edsel dealership. In September of 1957 they opened Spitler-Demmer Edsel in a former gas station with a one car showroom, in Nankin Township, at the corner of Glenwood and Wayne Road. In the fall of 1969, they moved to our present location. The state of the art dealership design was specified with a 12 car Showroom, 2 lane Service entrance with an indoor vehicle delivery area, a Body Shop, and Used Car sales and reconditioning at the same location.
Bill and Jim Demmer started working at the dealership in their teens. In March of 1975 Spitler-Demmer Ford became Jack Demmer Ford, when the Spitler's interest was bought out by the Demmer's. It wasn't long before Jack Demmer started expanding.
The business grew to become Jack Demmer Automotive Group in 1998 as the Demmer's opened a Lincoln-Mercury store in Farmington. Two years later, in the fall of 2000 the Demmer's had the opportunity to acquire Krug Lincoln-Mercury in Dearborn, one of the largest Lincoln-Mercury Dealers in the country. On December 21, 2000 two Dearborn locations opened as Jack Demmer Lincoln-Mercury and Jack Demmer Collision Center and the Farmington location closed. More than 50 years since its origination, the Jack Demmer Automotive Group is still family owned and operated (three generations) today.
